God's Mysterious Ways

Jul 13, 2022

Ten years ago today, at age 35, I married a 46 year old widower with three grown daughters and two grandchildren already! I instantly became a wife and grandma (they call me Kiki).

It was God's multi-faceted grace that opened my heart to this non-traditional route and God's grace was the theme of our wedding. And of course, it's God's grace that sustains us day by day, but God's providence is what I'm thinking of this morning.

William Cowper's hymn, "God Moves In a Mysterious Way" rings true in my heart right now and I often shake my head in wonder when I think how God's ways are not our ways. And they are much, much better than we could  ever imagine.

Cowper's hymn tells the story of bitter buds becoming sweet flowers and dark clouds showering us with mercy.

I hope you'll take time to read it below and reflect on its truth throughout the day.

Isaiah 55:8-9, "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. "

Until next time, keep your hymnal open.

God moves in a mysterious way
his wonders to perform;
he plants his footsteps in the sea,
and rides upon the storm.

Deep in unfathomable mines
of never-failing skill
he treasures up his bright designs,
and works his sovereign will.

Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take;
the clouds ye so much dread
are big with mercy, and shall break
in blessings on your head.

Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
but trust him for his grace;
behind a frowning providence
he hides a smiling face.

His purposes will ripen fast,
unfolding ev'ry hour;
the bud may have a bitter taste,
but sweet will be the flow'r.

Blind unbelief is sure to err,
and scan his work in vain;
God is his own interpreter,
and he will make it plain.
