While hymns are primarily intended for worship, hymns also play a powerful role in spiritual growth and equipping the saints!

Colossians 3 vs. 16 clues us in on this dual purpose: "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord."

"Sometimes a Light Surprises"

When poet and hymn writer William Cowper wrote, “Sometimes a light surprises the Christian while he sings," he wrote truth to which all God's people can relate.

The role of singing and hymns in the lives of God’s people is powerful. And as we see in Colossians 3:16, it’s also purposeful:

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. – Colossians 3:16

The mission of Hymns Illustrated is to help you apply Colossians 3:16 and integrate hymns in your daily walk with God.

This is accomplished through the Hymn of the Month (HOM), a free podcast that helps you meditate on that hymn each week, and through subscription plans that offer even more Christ-centered resources that use hymns as a starting point for learning God’s Word and growing closer to the Lord.

My prayer is to help you see for yourself that special light that surprises God’s people when they sing and read biblical hymns of faith.
