Mr. Cool
If there were a âMr. Cool Awardâ for hymn-writers, it would likely go to 19th century pastor Maltbie Babcock.
Not only was Maltbie a stellar student at Syracuse University and a gifted musician, he was also tall, athletic, popular, captain of the baseball team and an expert swimmer.
But what made Maltbie really "cool" is this:
While he likely would have been successful at nearly anything music or sports-related, upon graduation Maltbie followed Godâs call into ministry, entered seminary and soon became pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Lockport, New York.
Maltbie loved God and He loved God's people!
Not far from Niagara Falls and between Lake Eerie and Lake Ontorio, Lockport is a nature-lovers dream. Maltbie often enjoyed a hike or run in his beautiful surroundings and referred to these moments as âseeing His Fatherâs world."
Inspired by the beauty around him, Mr. Babcock wrote a 16 stanza poem entitled (not surprisingly) âMy Fatherâs World,â of which three stanzas appear in our hymnals as âThis Is My Fatherâs World.

This Is My Father's World
By Maltbie Babcock, 1858-1901
This is my Father's world,
And to my listening ears
All nature sings, and round me rings
The music of the spheres.
This is my Father's world:
I rest me in the thought
Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas;
His hand the wonders wrought.
Gen. 1:1; Ps. 24:1; Ps. 97:1; Ps. 148:3
This is my Father's world,
The birds their carols raise,
The morning light, the lily white
Declare their Maker's praise.
This is my Father's world:
He shines in all that's fair;
In the rustling grass I hear him pass,
He speaks to me everywhere.
Ps. 50:11; Ps. 148:9-10; Col. 1:17
This is my Father's world,
O let me ne'er forget
That though the wrong seems oft so strong,
God is the Ruler yet.
This is my Father's world:
The battle is not done;
Jesus who died shall be satisfied,
And earth and heaven be one.
Ps. 77:1; Ps. 103:19; John 16:33; Eph. 1:10; Rev. 21:2-3
