HYMN OF THE  MONTH:

Soldiers of Christ,  Arise!

by Charles Wesley, 1749

Our theme for 2025 is "We Believe" and we're  exploring core biblical doctrines we can pass to the next generation using hymns as a teaching tool. This month we're looking at the doctrine of spiritual warfare. We're living in the midst of a spiritual battle but God gives us everything we need to stay strong and faithful with the spiritual armor described for us in Ephesians 6.

In the 1740s, Charles and John Wesley were brothers who had recently trusted in Christ for salvation. They took a bold stand for what the Bible teaches by publicly encouraging God’s people to live out their faith every moment of every day.

When John and Charles Wesley became followers of Christ, they didn’t keep it a secret! They challenged believers to take their faith seriously—reading the Bible, praying often, memorizing Scripture, serving others, and making godly habits part of their everyday routines.

This serious and structured approach to Christian living became so well known that people began calling them and their followers “Methodists.” Because the Methodists lived differently from most people, they were often misunderstood—and even mistreated. Some were yelled at, had their homes damaged, and were even physically attacked for their faith.

In the middle of this hard time, Charles Wesley wrote "Soldiers of Christ, Arise" to encourage new believers. He wanted them to remember that following Jesus isn’t always easy—it’s a spiritual battle. But we’re not alone! God gives us spiritual armor to help us stand strong, just like it says in Ephesians 6:10–11.

The original hymn was long—sixteen verses! It first appeared in a book called Hymns and Sacred Poems in 1749. Later, John Wesley included parts of it in a Methodist hymn collection. The shorter version many churches sing today—just three verses—was published in 1847.

Even though it was written centuries ago, "Soldiers of Christ, Arise" still reminds us today that God gives His people everything we need to take a bold stand for Christ.

Soldiers of Christ, Arise!
By Charles Wesley, 1749

Soldiers of Christ, arise
And put your armor on,
Strong in the strength which God supplies
Through His eternal Son;
Strong in the Lord of hosts
And in His mighty power,
Who in the strength of Jesus trusts
Is more than conqueror.

Eph 6:10-11; 2 Tim 2:3; Rom. 8:37; Ps. 28:7; 1 Thess 5:8

Stand then in His great might,
With all His strength endued,
And take, to arm you for the fight,
The panoply of God.
From strength to strength go on
And wrestle, fight and pray;
Tread all the powers of darkness down
And win the well fought day.

Col 1:11; 2 Cor 10:3-4; 1 Cor 16:13; Rom 13:12; Ps. 18:39

Leave no unguarded place,
No weakness of the soul;
Take every virtue, every grace,
And fortify the whole;
That having all things done,
And all your conflicts past,
Ye may overcome thro' Christ alone
And stand complete at last.

Rom. 13:14; 1 Pet 5:8-9; 2 Pet 1:5-7; Heb 13:20-21; Phil 1:6
