’Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,
And to take Him at His word;
Just to rest upon His promise,
And to know, Thus says the Lord!

Refrain

Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!
How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er;
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
O for grace to trust Him more!

O how sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just to trust His cleansing blood;
And in simple faith to plunge me
’Neath the healing, cleansing flood!

Yes, ’tis sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just from sin and self to cease;
Just from Jesus simply taking
Life and rest, and joy and peace.

I’m so glad I learned to trust Thee,
Precious Jesus, Savior, friend;
And I know that Thou art with me,
Wilt be with me to the end.

Constant Trust

After moving from England to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1871, young Louisa Stead (her maiden name is unknown) attended a camp meeting and officially dedicated her life to missionary service but her ill-health delayed her departure.

Louisa soon married in 1875 and the couple had a daughter they named Lily.

One sunny day, the family went to the beach at Long Island Sound, New York and were enjoying a picnic when they heard the cries of a drowning boy. Mr. Stead jumped in to save the child but the frantic child pulled him under, too and both drowned before the eyes of Louisa and Lily.

During her grief, Louisa was inspired to write the words to “’Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus.”

Not long after this tragic incident, Louisa and Lily went to South Africa to begin missionary work.

The remainder of Lousia’s life included one more marriage to a Mr. Wodehouse, off-and-on missionary service related to her off-and-on health, the joy of seeing her daughter Lily dedicate her life to missionary service, too and, of course, a constant and sweet trust in Jesus.
