THE WONDROUS STORY: 2024 JOURNEY THROUGH FAVORITE HYMNS
Truth #6: God helps us love and live for Him.
Dangers. Toils. Snares. And Grace.
John Newton's earliest memories were of his mother, who, despite her fragile health, dedicated herself to praying for his soul and teaching Him the things of the Lord.
After her death when he was just a child, John alternated between boarding school and joining his father at sea where he joined in the sinful lifestyle that was prevalent and encouraged.
Forced into service with the British Navy, he deserted , was captured, flogged and even given to the captain’s mistress to be treated as one of the slaves.
More voyages, dangers, toils, and snares followed, creating a life more believable as fiction than real life.
One night in 1748, a surprise storm jolted twenty-three-year old John awake.
He cried to the Lord to spare His life and promised to live for Him from there on out. John finally trusted in and surrendered to Jesus and later wrote, “That tenth of March is a day much remembered by me; and I have never suffered it to pass unnoticed since the year 1748—the Lord came from on high and delivered me out of deep waters."
John’s spiritual growth was slow and it took him a while to give up his role at sea.
However, God providentially allowed him to suffer a seizure which helped remove him from his occupation. He finally had relief from the lifestyle that had been grieving his now converted soul.
He later became one of the most powerful evangelical preachers in British history, a staunch opponent of slavery, and the author of hundreds of hymns including Amazing Grace.

Amazing Grace
By John Newton (1725-1807)
Amazing grace! how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.
Ephesians 2:8-9; Luke 15:24; John 8:12
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed!
Matthew 10:28; 1 John 4:18; Romans 8:1
Through many dangers, toils, and snares,
I have already come;
'Tis grace that brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
1 Peter 5:10; 1 Chronicles 17:17-18; Hebrews 4:16
The Lord has promised good to me,
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be
As long as life endures.
1 Chronicles 17:23, 26; 2 Thessalonians 2:16; 2 Timothy 2:1; Hebrews 6:19
*When we've been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we’d first begun.
Matthew 13:43; Ephesians 1:6; Revelation 22:5
